OK to start of fair Facebook brought me great things. Its the biggest social network out there and without social media my projects would be nothing. Seriously. They rely on the support of people from all over the world and social media is a key to spread it around, big thanks Mark. Now since a few months you can share videos on Facebook, just like Youtube. Although both companies make money on advertisements, there is a major difference. Facebook kind of sucks…
Youtube The model behind it is honest for videomakers. A video you upload generate money from advertisements, which is profit for them. BUT they give a share back to the creator, you. Which is a fair deal 🙂
Facebook makes just like YT money from ads but keeps all income for themselves. If you make a very nice video and it get a lot of views you get nothing. In fact they even ask creators to pay FB for their content with their lame “promote” button. They have power to control peoples feed and are not afraid to use it. In this way it costs you money if you want to make sure people see your posts. . If you want to learn more about this watch these videos from Veritasium and Kurzgesagt
In short: on Youtube you can earn money, on Facebook you pay money.
Occasionally I make videos. The logical choice would be to post them on Youtube and F*ck Facebook. But then again I prefer to reach a big audience instead of making money, so for the sake of it they also end up on FB. I never really noticed a big difference between both of them until my latest project.
I made machines to recycle plastic and made a few videos of it. Posted 2 big ones on Youtube + Facebook to spread it as much as possible. That’s the goal of the videos. And after a while I noticed quite a difference. Yep much more views on Facebook, this got me thinking..
OK to be fair, Facebook is a bit of a cheater here. They call something a view if you just scroll over it on your timeline, Youtube calls something a view if you stick around for a while. In this way you easily get higher numbers on FB. Which looks impressive. But honestly you can’t compare views together.
BUT engagement is something you can see. And Facebook has much more comments and shares, hands down.
The video has even more shares on Facebook then it has views on Youtube.
It definitely got a bigger reach on FB. All in all I have to admit they spread it around much more and boosted the project enormously. People commented, liked and shared it intensively. HOWEVER I still dislike Facebook and their video system and don’t think its fair in the long-run.
So here is a message to the true fans. If you like my videos and want to spread them around. Go for Youtube first. Watch, like spread them from there, always.
Facebook should be the afterthought..
