Our name “Gaau1” is the Cantonese pronunciation of plastic while “Up” refers to Upcycling. We originally got inspired by Precious Plastic through Dave’s youtube videos and started making our own machines. We started the machine building without any knowledge of welding or machine building. Fortunately, we receive some help from Wheel Thing Makers, a local bike up-cyclers which rented us a working space. As well as showing us welding techniques and insightful advices.
Precious Plastic story caught our attention in summer 2016 but we couldn’t star building before the end of the year. We chipped in money from our own pockets at the start and managed to get our first shredder working by January 2017. Till now, we have already completed the building of shredder, extrusion and compression working in progress. We start to experiment with products too.
Those are some products extruded from PET.
Our aim is to raise awareness around plastic waste and the amount we produce daily to get a sense of responsibility for our own waste. We also plan to build a shredder powered by human power (cycling).
We face some challenges during our precious plastic journey but we feel we are on the right path now. Our shredder was not working smoothly, jamming occasionally. We were also having some issues with our extrusion machine which we are still currently dealing with it 😬
