Rice & Carry already up-cycle waste into gorgeous apparel, but had some plastic off-cuts they wanted to repurpose as well. Owner Henry and Colombo Design Studio Director Lee (@leebaz) are mad about waves, so they joined forces to design the perfect wax comb!

Their side project took about 10 months from design to finished product, with many humps and bumps along the road. Their biggest challenge was getting the right pipe fittings to go with their mould injection machine. They designed their way out of that hurdle by having the mould screw onto the pipe in two halves. This also meant there’s never any cold plastic stuck to one half of the mould!

Henry and Lee also ran into trouble with mould venting, where the tight fittings weren’t allowing enough air out. Nothing that some expert filing and drilling couldn’t fix after they identified the problem! Rice & Carry are now finessing the production process and have made some beautiful products already.

“The next step is to build a plastic shredder so that we can take even more old, dirty, beach polluting plastic and re-negotiate its terms into awesome, fun-giving products for all to enjoy!”

Last but not least, you can read about their experience in more detail here!
