Breathing celery #2

Experiencing for the second time a Juice Reboot might not be as fascinating as the first time. A story by Dave Hakkens.

Celery Juice reboot
Dave Hakken's Juice reboot experience.

Last year we did 31 days juice-reboot, yep the one from the video. It was quite an extreme thing to do, I had a very busy schedule that period, lost to much weight, and it felt like I was breathing celery. Overall I hated it but that’s why I liked it.

Why I liked it:

Something extreme like that pulls you out of your comfort zone, it makes you rethink your routine, it changes your automatic reply when someone says ‘cookie?’ Overal you get a good reset, mentally. It makes you stronger, you beat the challenge. Ever since I’ve been wondering whether it’s truly a healthy thing to do, many researchers say it’s great many prove them wrong. I dunno. Until this day I still haven’t figured out whether it's truly healthy and I probably never will. But I like trying things. I mean I felt weak doing it, but physically stronger afterward. Didn’t eat any sugar, fat, additives only vitamins for a month but also missed out on proteins, good fats, and probably some other crucial things. Overall it boosted my mental strength.

Naturally, we did it again this year

Started at the beginning of January, right after eating too much during the December holidays. Only this time we went for two weeks instead of four. As it turns out doing this for the second time is definitely a difference.
Upside: 2 weeks is much easier to squeeze into your calendar and fewer excuses to postpone.
Downside: First time rebooting is new, interesting, finding out how your body reacts to it (how little you poop), experience how impressive it is that you can live on just a tiny bit of food. The second time rebooting is well.. none of that. You just need to finish it.

Either way, both of them are a struggle and both were interesting experiences. Below I’ve gathered some of the things we learned during these reboots, they might help you get going.

two jars of juice on a train
1: Prepare yourself, wherever you go make sure you always have juices with you or have a juice-bar on the horizon. You feel fine when you keep drinking, but if you don’t intake enough juices in a day you will feel horrible.

local market in eindhoven
2: The best way to get fruits and vegetables when juicing is at the market. Go here at the end of the day when they want to get rid of it. Buy the soft mangos or the brown apples nobody wants for a great deal. You will probably drink them within days and it doesn't matter for a juice whether they look pretty. (also look at those crates)

jars of juice in the garden
3: Last year I was traveling for a big part –in Singapore where the weather is comfortably warm.  This year I was in the Netherlands, it's freaking cold here now. Juicing when it's warm is definitely easier, and better fruits available!

box of cans of artificial juice
4: We love drinking coconut water when juicing, well actually we always do…But we haven’t got fresh coconuts in the Netherlands. We have some canned and packed versions but most of them are quite disgusting, with weird ingredients inside and don’t taste anything like the real deal. Recently discovered these ones, quite expensive but it’s a great little treat when juicing.

5: Sometimes those weird combinations make great juices. This one is mango, spinach, and red cabbage.

Conclusion

Overall I still highly recommend trying something like this. As I said, it pulls you out of your comfort zone, it makes you appreciate food, and probably destroy a few nasty habits. Sure it might not be the healthiest weeks of your life. But these couple of weeks will have a big difference for the rest of the weeks to come. They harden you, make you mentally stronger. Oh, and one last thing, you will dream about pizza every night…
